Vice President of Communications

The Women’s Suffrage National Monument Foundation seeks a dynamic and experienced Vice President of Communications (VP of Comms) to lead its public relations, strategic communications, and media engagement efforts. The VP of Comms will work closely with the President & CEO to develop and execute a comprehensive communications strategy that raises awareness of the organization’s mission and engages key stakeholders in the work of building the first monument on the National Mall dedicated to American women’s history. The ideal candidate must have experience in cultural institutions, nonpartisan operations, and management of internal and external communications.

Key Responsibilities

  • Strategic Communications Leadership
    • Lead the development and execution of a comprehensive communications strategy aligned with the Foundation’s mission, goals, and initiatives.
    • Cultivate and manage key relationships with current and new stakeholders, including media outlets, thought leaders, and influencers to amplify the Foundation’s message and initiatives.
  • Public Relations & Media Engagement
    • Oversee media relations and serve as a spokesperson for the Foundation.
    • Develop press materials, speeches, op-eds, internal and external FAQs, and other content that effectively communicates the Foundation’s work and impact.
    • Proactively pitch stories to national, regional, and local media outlets to ensure sustained visibility of the Foundation’s projects and programs.
    • Manage media training for public-facing executives and board members.
  • Content Development & Branding
    • Oversee the creation of branding and marketing materials and owned channels, including all digital and print communications, website, newsletters, social media channels, and annual reports.
    • Ensure all messaging aligns with the Foundation’s brand voice, mission, and values, providing a cohesive narrative to the public.
    • Develop storytelling strategies for the Foundation’s owned channels that showcase the impact of the Foundation’s work, highlighting both historical and contemporary significance.
    • Oversee and manage all content developed in coordination with the organization’s National Partners.
  • Internal Communications & Stakeholder Engagement
    • Collaborate closely with the executive team, board members, and staff to ensure consistent messaging across internal and external communications.
    • Support fundraising and advocacy campaigns with clear, compelling messaging that resonates with donors, policymakers, and community partners.
    • Create and maintain the organization’s crisis communications plan, preparing for and responding to any issues or public relations challenges that may arise.
  • Event & Program Communications
    • Lead the Foundation’s communications strategy for key events, programs, and initiatives, including anniversary celebrations, educational forums, and advocacy campaigns.
    • Partner with other departments to ensure events are well-promoted, properly communicated, and effectively executed to maximize public engagement.
    • Pitch Foundation leadership to local and national events, panels, and speaking engagements.

Qualifications

  • Education
    • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, History, Political Science, or a related field. Master’s degree preferred.
  • Experience
    • At least 10 years of experience in communications, public relations, or advocacy, with a proven track record in nonprofit, museum, or cultural institution communications and nonpartisan operations.
    • Strong understanding of U.S. history and a deep commitment to women’s history.
    • Experience leading media relations and brand development in a national context.
    • Demonstrated experience building and managing a team and working cross-functionally with fundraising, marketing, and program departments.
    • Demonstrated experience effectively managing public relations and marketing contracts and contractors.
    • Proven ability to develop and lead a communications strategy for a national project/organization.
  • Skills & Abilities
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to craft compelling narratives for various audiences.
    • Strong public speaking and presentation skills.
    • Understanding of digital communications, social media platforms, and content management systems.
    • Ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines, and adapt to changing circumstances.
    • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with a diverse set of stakeholders, including staff, donors, media, and the public.
  • Other
    • Passion for preserving and promoting women’s history.
    • Creative, forward-thinking, and solutions-oriented approach to communications challenges.
    • Skilled expertise with public speaking and media interviews, with a proven ability to handle complex projects with care and professionalism.
    • Ability to travel 10-20% of the calendar year.

Although this is primarily a remote position, the ideal candidate will be based in the greater Washington, D.C. area. The salary for this position is $150,000 plus competitive benefits, including 100% covered employee medical, vision, and dental insurance, as well as a retirement plan with a 401(k) employer matching program. The anticipated start date for this position is June 2025.
