About the Monument (Testing Slideshow) - Women's Suffrage Monument Foundation

It all started with a question – “Why aren’t women’s stories woven into the monumental fabric of the National Mall?”

That is the question the 116th Congress answered when, in celebration of the centennial of the 19th Amendment, bipartisan leaders in Congress unanimously passed a historic bill establishing the Women’s Suffrage National Monument. The bill was signed into law by President Trump on December 17, 2020, and charged the Women’s Suffrage National Monument Foundation with building a monument in Washington, D.C. dedicated to the great women of American history.

A second bill was required to secure a prominent location for the monument in Washington, D.C. And once again, congressional leaders from both sides of the aisle came together in overwhelming support of the Women’s Suffrage National Monument. On January 4, 2025, President Biden signed Public Law 118-226, which cleared the way for the Women’s Suffrage National Monument to be built on the National Mall.

The Women’s Suffrage National Monument Foundation was named in the legislation to lead the effort to fund, design, and construct the Women’s Suffrage Monument.

Of the 40 monuments, memorials, and statues that currently exist on the National Mall – the most visited National Park in the United States – NONE are dedicated to the great women of American history. It is time to tell their stories.

The Women’s Suffrage National Monument will be built on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. The final site on the National Mall is expected to be announced in 2026.

It all began with a simple question — where are the women on the National Mall? That question would change the course of history, and lead to the founding of the Women’s Suffrage National Monument Foundation.

On December 17, 2020, with unanimous bipartisan support from Congress, President Trump signed Public Law 116-217, which charges the Women’s Suffrage National Monument Foundation with building a monument in Washington, D.C. to honor the pioneers of the early American women’s suffrage movement. On January 4, 2025, with bipartisan support in Congress, President Biden signed Public Law 118-226, the Women’s Suffrage National Monument Location Act, which authorizes the monument to be built in the heart of the National Mall in the area designated as “the Reserve.”

On December 20, 2024, the U.S. Senate passed H.R. 1318 which authorized the Women’s Suffrage National Monument to be built on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. On December 4, 2025 the Foundation received final and unanimous approval from the National Capital Planning Commission (NCPC) for a permanent two and a half acre site on the National Mall in Constitution Gardens. This approval marked the final step in the comprehensive site selection process and pinpointed the exact location–at the intersection of 19th St. and Constitution Avenue NW–where the Women’s Suffrage National Monument will stand on the National Mall, securing its presence among America’s greatest civic tributes.

Like most federal monuments and memorials, the Women’s Suffrage National Monument will be funded entirely through private donations. The costs for building the monument must be raised before construction can begin.

With the location set, money raised, and monument design finalized, we will begin construction of the monument.

Once unveiled, the monument will be permanently woven into the National Mall, and will exist in America’s Front Yard forever. The monument will be open to the public every day, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
