WASHINGTON, D.C.— Today, author, educator, public historian, and speaker Michelle Duster was appointed to the Women’s Suffrage National Monument Foundation Board.
“Our nation’s story is one of persistent struggle toward equality,” said Duster. “I look forward to joining the WSNMF’s effort to ensure our Nation’s Capital tells that story in full, and helps inspire current and future generations through more inclusive and truthful representation.”
Through her work, Duster seeks to highlight the positive contributions of women and African Americans to the United States, including that of her great-grandmother, Ida B. Wells. She has written articles and books, worked on monuments, markers, murals, films, concerts, and film festivals — all to uplift stories from American history that have been omitted, skewed, or marginalized. Duster’s most recent books are: Ida B. Wells, Voice of Truth (2022) and Ida B. the Queen (2021).
Duster and the WSNMF board and staff will now work in partnership with the National Park Service to lead the effort to fund, design, and construct a national monument to serve as a lasting legacy of the early American movement for women’s equality.
