Women’s Suffrage National Monument Foundation Welcomes GFWC International President Wendy J. Carriker to its Council of Ambassadors

WASHINGTON, D.C. — In celebration of Women’s Equality Day as the country celebrates the historic 250th anniversary year for the United States, the Women’s Suffrage National Monument Foundation today announced the appointment of General Federation of Women’s Clubs (GFWC) International President Wendy J. Carriker to its Council of Ambassadors. The appointment marks the next step in the ongoing partnership between the Foundation and GFWC to build the first monument on the National Mall dedicated to American women’s history and the suffrage movement.

Founded in 1890, the General Federation of Women’s Clubs has served as a cornerstone of community organization and civic advocacy across the nation, endorsing women’s suffrage in 1914 and mobilizing thousands of clubwomen to champion the 19th Amendment. Today, GFWC continues its collaboration with the Foundation to ensure that the women who expanded American democracy take their rightful place in the nation’s capital.

“Through its engaged and dedicated membership, GFWC was instrumental to the suffrage movement,” said Anna Laymon, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Women’s Suffrage National Monument Foundation. “We are delighted to welcome Wendy Carriker to our Council of Ambassadors as we work together to pay tribute to the generations of clubwomen who paved the way.”

Women’s Equality Day commemorates the anniversary of the 1920 certification of the 19th Amendment. The annual celebration recognizes the persistence, courage, and vision of the suffragists who expanded American democracy.
