“This year I am turning our Mount Harmony Elementary library into a women's museum thanks to a local grant. Students are learning about suffragists and women who "shaped history." We cannot underestimate the voice of children and I have no doubt that our suffragists were shaping their ideas and voices from a young age. I envision the monument including key figures as children holding hands in a circle representing the idea of completeness or one. This would suggest that girls matter from the very beginning of their lives! Our elementary students have also suggested that the monument consider the idea of making it a playground that tells the story using a timeline. Families would flock to a monument where they could teach their children while their children play. The first monument dedicated to women will surely draw millions- as a "playground" it would be visited again and again. It should not solely be a structure- the women never sat still, shouldn't the monument reflect their incessant actions?”
Our library motto is, "History shapes us, how will you shape history?' Our theme this year is "Living the Legacy: Celebrating the women who shaped our world."
