“As a 34 year member of GFWC/Iowa I am proud to support and submit a monumental idea for the national monument in D.C. I am proud of our Iowa ancestor, Carrie Chapman Catt for the legacy of advocacy for the political equity of men and women. Carrie Chapman Catt served 2 terms as President of the National American Woman Suffrage Association. Catt led the battle for ratification of the 19th Amendment, which required the approval of 36 state legislatures (3/4 of the then 48 states.) Catt was also a leader of the international women's suffrage movement. She helped to found the International Woman Suffrage Alliance (IWSA) in 1902, which eventually incorporated sympathetic associations in 32 nations.
The state of Iowa was one of the 36 original states to ratify the 19th Amendment doing so on July 2, 1919.
